Wonder Woman
1/6/17 After the series of disasters from DC, the saviour of Batman V Superman has saved the new superhero franchise. An exciting, majestic looking blockbuster with a charismatic performance from Gal Gadot. A little baggy in the midsection (141 minutes is too long) yet it uses some neat techniques to make it look like it has been ripped from the pages of the comic book. It's a wonder!

X-Men: First Class
29/5/17 One of the best in the series. An origins story that feels as fresh and exciting as the first X-Men. James McAvory and Michael Fassbender lead a terrific cast in a tale of a world on nuclear brink and one man who wants to start it all. Amazing special effects and a crisp script, this injected new life in the series after The Last Stand almost brought it to a halt.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul (2017)
26/5/17 With a new cast, this would be reboot of the popular series based on the best-selling books is, quite frankly, awful. A succession of gross-out jokes with every bodily function imaginable and without any charm. A massively misguided family film that includes a spoof of Psycho? What's even worst is that Alicia Silverstone, who once had a promising career, has left her dignity at the side of the road along with the film's charm.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
25/5/17 We're back at sea with the fifth of this endless franchise and while we maybe hoping for a fresh new approach, it never comes. This is loud, noisy and in your face, like some child wanting to impress, with Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow becoming increasingly annoying. Time to let this ship sail into the sunset or sink without a trace. Dull and boring.

Snatched
22/5/17 What could be better than putting the two queens of comedy together in one movie? Maybe if they made the script funny, that would have been better. Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn play daughter and mother on holiday in South America when they get kidnapped and have to escape by themselves, bickering all the while. What starts off as amusing soon becomes predictable and tiresome.

Miss Sloane
15/5/17 A political thriller about a lobbyist fighting against pro-guns might not seem the most exciting of subject matters but this wordy film is given an ace card: Jessica Chastain. She is mesmerizing in a role that, frankly, is unlikeable and yet she dominates the screen throughout, leaving the rest of the cast as bit players. Well worth watching just for her performance and the neat twist in the final act.

Alien: Covenant
12/5/17 After the disappointment of Prometheus, Ridley Scott returns to form with this sequel in which a crew delivering a colony, discover a voice from a nearby planet, only to find that they have to duped into a new creation if alien creature. Gone is the pompousness and pretentiousness, replaced by action, scares and plenty of shocks and gore. It's the Alien movie that Prometheus should have been.

Internal Affairs
9/5/17 Dark thriller with Andy Garcia as an Internal affairs cop investigating Richard Gere, in a deadly game of cat and mouse. Mike Figgis's powerful film is both gripping and impressive, with a career high performance from Gere at his most evil. Solid support from Laurie Metcalf as Garcia's partner in a truly adult thriller that treats its audience like adults.

X-Men: The Last Stand
5/5/17 I don't understand the bad blood this third part has received. It might not have the emotional punch of the first two but as a piece of comic book entertainment, it does the trick as the X-Men tackle Magneto once more for a child who has powers to heal the mutants, while Jean Gray becomes a force too powerful. Brett Radner might not be as solid a director as Bryan Singer, but he knows not to spoil the world he has done on the series.

Shaun of the Dead
3/5/17 The first part of Edgar Wright's Cornetto trilogy is still his best. A joyfully silly zombie comedy with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as the hapless heroes who find they are surrounded by the living dead. Filled with references to George A. Romeo's Living Dead movies, as well as a barrage of pop culture nods, especially when using vinyl as a weapon. Hilarious.

Saving Mr. Banks
1/5/17 Fascinating film about how Mary Poppins almost never got made due to the stubbornness of its creator, P.L. Travers. Cutting from her childhood to her time working on the script and being wooed by Walt Disney, Emma Thompson is terrific as Travers, while Tom Hanks brings a gentle calmness to his Disney. Funny, sweet and moving, it makes you look at the family classic in a different way.
