If you didn't know this was a Woody Allen film, you'd know this was a Woody Allen film. Jessie Eisenberg stars as a New Yorker wanting to find a new life in LA but instead falls for Kristen Stewart, who just happens to have a secret that sends him back to New York to become a star of the cafe society. Very slight Allen affair with his usual traits but not as many laughs.

The third in the series is a relentlessly bleak affair and yet fits perfectly with the rest of the films, as Andy Serkis' Caesar takes on Woody Harrelson's The Colonel in a brutal game of wits. The CGI is extraordinary, the script sharp and intelligent and it has to be said that the Planet of the Apes 21st century versions should be recognised as an outstanding trilogy. Fantastic.

The third outing for Gru and his Minions, this time round taking on an 80's former child star while Gru comes face-to-face with the identical twin brother he didn't know he had. While the pre-credit sequence is hilarious and some of the jokes hit the target, this is a franchise that is getting slightly tiresome. Flashes of what makes this series fun aren't enough to make this a great film.

Edgar Wright's superb action thriller is almost like a musical in which the soundtrack plays just as important a part of the story as the actors. Ansel Elgort is the getaway driver who is forced into a job that is doomed to fail. With superb set pieces and a soundtrack that out beats Guardians of the Galaxy, this is the coolest, smartest movie of the year so far.

David Cronenberg's shocking remake of the 50's classic is more than just a gory horror as we watch mild-mannered scientist Jeff Goldblum turn into a fly after an experiment with a teleporter goes wrong. Part beauty and the beast-esque love story, part journey into madness, this still has the power to shock while at the same time amazed by the superb make-up and effects. Definitely not for the sqeamish.

One of the big surprises of the year. A smart, charming, funny and touching tale of a man trying to protect the young maths prodigy and wanting a normal life for her. Rich with a cracking script from Tom Flynn and subtle, understated performances from Chris Evans, Mckenna Grace and a brilliant turn from Lindsay Duncan. This isn't the film you think it is. A delight!

The first in the new franchise Dark Universe, feels like a Tom Cruise movie which The Mummy has decided to jump on board for the ride. Brimming with CGI and Tom running and jumping, while other characters explain everything, this borrows so much from other, better movies, that you long to be at home watching those better movies. A missed opportunity.
