...All the Marbles
AKA: The California Dolls. Peter Falk is at his sleaziest as the manager of The California Dolls, a female wrestling tag-team, who have spent their lives on the brink of making it but never quite get there until an opportunity raises its head. Part road movie, part exploitation flick, this Robert Aldrich directed comedy-drama isn't as good as his other sports movie, The Longest Yard but it has all the usual tough talking you'd expect from an Aldrich film.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
I really didn't like this when it first came out. 8 years later, decided to give it another try as I do like Edgar Wright's work and I can honestly say I'm enjoying it much more this time around. It's still undisciplined as I first thought but the humour is more at the forefront and the effects and general style is unique enough to make it interesting. Plus it's cool to see a cast who have gone onto bigger and better things (Chris Evans, Anna Kendricks, Brie Larson).

Too Many Crooks (1958)
A terrific British comedy with a cracking cast. A gang of wanna-be crooks decide to blackmail a wealthy businessman when they accidentally kidnap his wife who wants to rob him out of every penny he has. Like a who's who of British comedy with George Coe, Terry-Thomas and Sid James in the leads. A courtroom scene that is as ludicrous as it is funny and a lovely gentle twist. Could easily have been an Ealing comedy or an early Carry On.

Carry On... Up the Khyber
Probably the best of the Carry On films. During the British rule of India, the 5th Foot and Mouth are the most feared regiment until one is discovered to be wearing underwear beneath his kilt, which triggers a war. Crammed with terrible puns and the usual collection of innuendos, this has the best ending with a meal during an invasion. Any film that has character names like Sidney Rough-Diamond, the Khasi of Kalabar and Bungdit In cannot be all bad.

Paddington 2
How is it possible for a film to be this charming. I laughed just as hard, cried just as hard and felt like life if we had a Paddington in our lives, would be warm and charming. And why can't we sort our problems out with a hard stare? I love, love, love this film. Can I give it 11 out of 10?

Pacific Rim: Uprising
Ten years after the original and John Boyega stars as the son of Idris Elba's character, forced to join the Pan Pacific Defense Corp to train new pilots for the Jaegers only to find an evil within the corporation. Lacking in Guillermo del Toro's wonderment and affection for Japanese monster movies, this is a loud and destructive movie that lacks any real connection with the characters and relies on just robots fighting monsters and that just isn't enough.

Christine
Rebecca Hall gives a powerhouse performance is a hidden gem, based on true events of TV reporter Christine Chubbuck, a relentlessly determined woman longing for a promotion during the male-dominated world of the 1970's, who decides to take an action that would shock the world. A fascinating and shocking tale that captures the mood and tone of a time when men ruled and women were refused entry. Hall carries the film with the best performance of her career.

Peter Rabbit
Excruciating CGI/live-action family fare with James Cordon as the smug and annoying title character, battling with the new owner of a farm he wants for his own. The slapstick comedy is flat and delivered with a sledgehammer approach to comedy, it's saving grace is Domnhall Gleeson milking every inch of comedy out of the lame material. Nothing to do with Beatrix Potter's classic characters, it should be renamed Annoying Bunny!

The Thing from Another World
Classic sci-fi from Howard Hawkes as a team of scientists discover a giant spacecraft frozen in the Antartica, only for them to release the creature who starts to kill the crew one by one. This low-budget sci-fi still has plenty of creepy moments and fans of John Carpenter's remake will enjoy the similarities and yet enjoy it for how terrific this is. James Arness makes for a great alien.

Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro directs a monster movie that is everything the Transformers films should have been. The Earth is under attack from creatures from the deep and it's up to Idris Elba and his team of robot pilots to take them on. Yes, it's giant robots versus giant monsters. What's not to like? While it's wildly ludicrous, it's far too much fun that you tend to ignore just how ridiculous it all gets. Any film that has a robot using a tanker ship as a weapon gets my vote.
