Game of Death
 Game of Death 1/10

Game of Death
Really poor martial arts movie that uses the very few scenes that Bruce Lee filmed (around 15 minutes) and built around it tale of mobsters who are trying to kill a movie star. Replacing Lee with actors who hide their faces with sunglasses, in shadows or (worst of all) a photo superimposed. The acting is dire and the only reason to watch this is for the two fights that Lee filmed in 1972 when he was originally planning this movie. Dire.

The Owl and the Pussycat
Somewhat dated sex comedy with George Segal as a mild-mannered writer whose life is turned upside-down when Barbra Streisand's prostitute enters his life. Based on a stage play, Buck Henry's screenplay cannot escape the stagey nature of this virtual two-hander and while both Streisand and Segal do their best with the material, the humour relies on them bickering and shouting at each other. It's enjoyable in fits and starts but on the whole, it should be looked upon as a curiosity of the time.

Avengers: Infinity War
Having invested 10 years in this growing universe, it has come to this, a massive, epic adventure on a huge scale that brings together the heroes from the various movies to take on Thanos, the villain who has been in the background of most of these movies since The Avengers. It doesn't disappoint. It had me laughing, crying, shaking and whooping. From the outset, it sets its stall up that this isn't going to be an easy ride and as for the finale. Wow!

Truth or Dare
A disappointing horror film that borrows heavily from Final Destination but without the scares or the gore. A group of friends head off to Mexico for Spring Break and are lured into a desolate monastery to play a game of truth or dare, not knowing that the game is possessed and the players have to keep playing otherwise they die. The problem, apart from the unbelievable concept, was that it telegraphed each death way in advanced so the scares weren't there. Not very good.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
Gentle, charming British drama set just after the war, where writer Lily James receives a letter from a book club in Guernsey after they have read one of her books. She heads to the small island and discovers the founder of the group has disappeared and a mystery starts. All very nice and perfect with a cup of tea but not a single shock or surprise in it. Does exactly what it says on the posters. A strong ensemble cast works well. Not terrible by a long shot, just a little safe.

Never Steady, Never Still
A slow-moving, yet fully emotional drama with Shirley Henderson as a woman suffering from Parkinson's disease trying to cope with having to fend for herself after her husband dies, while her son has to cope with bullying at his workplace and confused with his sexuality. Beautifully shot, this doesn't rush through its storytelling and in places, scenes outstay their welcome. Yet it is Henderson's extraordinary performance that keeps you gripped and is the heart of this tragedy.

Stardust Memories
Woody Allen's most personal film, his variation of Fellini's 8 1/2. A film director is invited to a retrospective of his work and while his fans love his earlier, funny films, he is now making deep, philosophical dramas while being inspired by the women in his life, particularly an actress who had problems. Filmed in black and white, this covers all of Allen's neurosis as well as an attack on critics and the whole filmmaking process.

A decent cast is wasted in a flat, uninvolving action movie about an elite team of the police force who have to face with day-to-day training until they are called upon to escort a French criminal who places a bounty on those who can break him out of police custody. Samuel L. Jackson and Colin Farrell lead the cast which includes a young Jeremy Renner in a film that lacks character development or an interesting plot line but prefers to concentrate on unexciting set pieces.

Shoot to Kill
A forgotten gem. This cracking thriller has Sidney Poitier as an FBI agent in pursuit of a diamond thief and killer. Heading into the wilderness where the criminal has hooked up with a fishing party, being led by Kirstie Alley, Poitier has to team up with wilderness expert Tom Berenger but will nature kill them before they can find their target. A tense and exciting film that is helped by a good double act from the two leads and Poitier's instinct for comedy.

Ghost Stories
A decent enough British horror film that is reminiscent of the old Amicus anthology movies of the 70's, in which a professor setting out to investigate three unexplained and unconnected paranormal incidents, only to discover that something in his past is about to rear its head. Based on the hugely successful stage play, this has plenty to admire, from the slickness of the direction to the performances and a delicious twist, yet it relies on jump scares and after A Quiet Place, this pales in its path.
