Mel Brooks's first film celebrates 50 years with a rare cinematic screening. Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder are superb as the Broadway producer and accountant who work out they will make more money from a flop than a hit and so try everything they can to find a losing formula. Still as bad taste, as it was on its first release, seeing it on the big screen is like watching it for the first time. Sharp, funny and the most underrated screen double act ever. Oh, and then there's Springtime For Hitler.

Dated teen drama with David Hemmings as the singer of a pop group who moves to Brighton with his family when they open a guest house. A thin plot hangs are hung together by a series of musical numbers, including Jerry Lee Lewis. The script is weak while some of the performances are creaky, which leads to a talent show. Interesting as a piece of curiosity but little else.

Outstanding British gangster film with Michael Caine at his nastiest as Jack Carter, a man who comes to Newcastle to find out the truth about his brother's death. A mix of brutal violence and 70's sexism, it's a tough ride as Caine has to face gangs from Newcastle as well as the wrath of his colleagues in London. With Roy Budd's memorable theme tune, this is one of Caine's finest hours, making an unlikeable character watchable.

The fourth of the Mission: Impossible franchise and directed by Brad Bird, sees Tom Cruise and his team getting into the groove of the series with a bonkers story about nuclear launch codes. Joined by Jeremy Renner, the action sequences are excellent, peppered with neatly timed humour, it starts with a prison break in Russia and ends with a breath-taking fight in a car park. Tremendous fun from start to finish.

Chaotic British comedy directed by Michael Winner in which a group of soldiers, as part of an initiation test, are sent out to find a series of eclectic objects for Denholm Elliott. Lots of shouting and running disguises the weaker of the gags but the cast of familiar British talent (Terry-Thomas, Bernard Cribbins, Lionel Jeffreys) all give it plenty of energy, even if it messy and undisciplined. Perfectly fine for a wet Sunday afternoon but won't stay around in the memory long after.

A film that has future cult hit written right through it. During riots in the not-too-distant future, a bank robbery goes wrong and two thieves end up going to Hotel Artemis, a members-only hospital for criminals run by Nurse and her health care professional, Everest. Unfortunately for all, it's the same night that The Wolf King, a huge gangland boss and owner, is on his way. A muddled mix of genres is held together by an energetic cast led by Jodie Foster.

Superb first outing for Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt in Brian De Palma's skillfully directed blockbuster. As the IMF team are killed during a mission and only Ethan Hunt is alive, he must get a list of known agents to an arms dealer known as Max while trying to stop the double crossing and triple crossing that is occurring within his own unit. Crammed with decent set pieces including the now-classic scene in the vault where Ethan is dangling in a room trying to get the list. Now that's what I call a blockbuster.
