Carry on Cabby
25/2/17 Early entry from the Carry On team that gives a good indication on the direction the series would be going. Workaholic Sid James runs a cab company who finds unexpected competition. Very dated in its depiction of women but the energy of the cast and some cheap laughs still makes it watchable, even if the sexual politics are a little dubious.

The Darjeeling Limited
17/2/17 Wes Anderson's bizarre journey through India as three warring brothers travel a train to find themselves after their father's death. The plot is a mess, the events are surreal yet the performances are fun and you can't help but be drawn in by Anderson's keen eye and his unique filmmaking style. Not his best by a long shot but still far more interesting than most directors.

The Founder
16/2/17 Fascinating story of the man who ruthlessly took away a dream from two brothers and turned it into his own personal empire. Michael Keaton storms it as Ray Kroc in this tale of one man's American dream and how he would do anything to achieve it. Somehow it seems more relevant now than I guess the filmmakers thought it would be.

The LEGO Batman Movie
15/2/17 DC take note. This is how you make a decent Batman movie. The laughs come even before the opening logos start, this delivers self-referential gag after self-referential gag, taking swipes at previous Batman movies while adding enough material on its own merit. Loses it's way a little by the end and isn't as good as The Lego Movie, it still puts other modern comedies to shame.

The Trip
14/2/17 Peter Fonda is a TV commercial director in the midst of a divorce who is persuaded to push his troubles to one side for a night taking LSD. The result is a trippy, psychedelic movie that lacks one important strand...a plot. Directed by Roger Corman and written by Jack Nicholson, this is more a visual nightmare than an examination into the effects of the drug.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2
13/2/17 Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a masterpiece of horror. This isn't. Tobe Hooper's sequel is as far removed from his 1974 original as you can get. Gone is the grimy, disturbing atmosphere to be replaced by loud, bizarre nonsense that is flowing with gore while turns Leatherface from a terrifying menace to a bumbling, love-struck fool. Dreadful.

Lion
12/2/17 Truly remarkable film based on the true story of a man, brought up in Australia, searching for his real home and real mother in India by using Google Earth. Heartbreaking, uplifting and inspirational, it has one of the best performances from a child actor and Dev Patel is superb as the older version. Superb.

On Golden Pond
9/2/17 Oscar-winning drama with Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn as the elderly couple spending time at their lakeside retreat, where they are joined by daughter Jane Fonda, whose relationship with her father is tarnished. Charming, gentle and occasionally funny, this ticks all the boxes if you want a film that you can simply float along with.
